"butterfly" is a satirical picture book that uses an insect society as a metaphor to expose how contemporary society creates body image anxiety. It tells the story of a bee who, in order to enter a legendary tower, cuts off her own wings and replaces them with butterfly wings—the idealized form according to mainstream beauty standards—mocking how people constantly alter themselves to conform to ever-changing aesthetic ideals. Through fable, dark humor, and visual storytelling, the book critiques the social power structures behind beauty standards and explores how the pursuit of external validation can lead individuals away from their true selves.
